Critical Reflection on 'Skills on Wheels'
With the upcoming IWSP in mind, I identify closely with the two modules “Building Relationship” and “Managing Conflict”. Through the selection of these modules, I hope to be well equipped with skills that can enable me to better build positive working relationships with my future colleagues and effectively deal with conflict when it arises.
After completion of the “Building Relationship” module, I learnt that there are two different approaches to take when interacting with others. In situations pertaining more towards a personal level, the S.E.E.D technique could be applied to build trust and rapport. On the other hand, when in a task oriented setting, the L.E.A.R.N technique would be applied instead.
Following, the “Managing Conflict” module has taught me on the effective ways to resolve conflicts constructively and respectfully. It is important to go through the conflict management process - S.H.R.I.N.K and apply active listening and questioning techniques. Managing emotions is also crucial aspect as many a times we tend to react impulsively. Additionally, I have come to understand that walking away in the middle of a heated conflict is not sign of weakness but rather a strategic decision.
Generally, I did quite well for both selected modules. I managed to achieve 100% for all assessments in the “Building relationship” module and scored an average of 90% for the “Managing Conflict” module. Skills on Wheels is definitely an effective platform in engaging students to learn in a fun way. The provision of iSimulation was intriguing as the interactive videos portrayed different scenarios in an actual workplace setting based on the chosen option. Besides, the use of infographics had further facilitated learning. Through this, I believe I can readily apply the different techniques learnt during my internship.
